THE BUZZ HAS BEGUN: BROTHER DEREK’S FIRST-CROP 2YOS CONTINUE TO SHINE AT AUCTION, HIGHLIGHTED BY 270K OBS JUVENILE

Brother Derek, one of the most talented members of one of the most vaunted generation of racehorses in recent memory, continues to give every indication that his brilliance on the track will translate to major success in the stud barn.  A Grade 1 winner at both 2 and 3 and the Derby morning line favorite from a crop that included Barbaro, Bernardini, Discreet Cat, First Samurai, Henny Hughes, Bluegrass Cat and Stevie Wonderboy, Brother Derek’s first crop of 2yos have quickly become the buzz of the juvenile sales scene.  To date, 8 Brother Derek’s have walked into the sales ring and 7 have sold, producing an enviable average of nearly $108,000.  Yesterday’s third OBS session produced his newest sales star, a beautifully balanced colt prepared by Eisaman Equine that sold to Zayat Stables for $270,000.

A juvenile sale bullet earner himself as a 2-year-old, Brother Derek’s race record bodes awfully well for his high priced offspring.  After working 20 4/5 at the 2005 Barretts sale, Brother Derek wasted no time in breaking his maiden in May of his 2yo year en route to annexing the Grade II Norfolk Stakes and the Grade 1 Hollywood futurity that year.  He would then train on to be a star sophomore and show both the toughness and versatility to stretch his speed out to two-turns at racing’s highest level.  In other words, the Brother Dereks are already proudly following in their sire’s footsteps.
