Cairo Prince’s 3-year-old colt Mihos chalked up his first stake win on Saturday afternoon at Gulfstream Park with a thrilling score in the $100,000 Mucho Macho Man S.
After breaking his maiden at Aqueduct on Nov. 24, Mihos trained up to his stakes debut on Saturday. Breaking from the outside post in the field of six sophomores, the bay colt was at or near the back of the compact field for the first six furlongs. Despite a four-wide trip on the turn, he forged his way to second at the top of the stretch, then ran down a loose on the lead Trophy Chaser to get the win by a neck in 1:37.56 on a fast main track.
Trained by Jimmy Jerkens for Centennial Farms, Mihos has won two of three starts and earned $108,880. A $320,000 purchase by his owners out of the 2017 Keeneland September Yearling sale, Mihos is out of Flatline Feline, a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Sharla Rae.
Cairo Prince concluded 2018 ranked third on the First-Crop Sire list win more than $1.25 million in progeny earnings, led by Iroquois S. (G3) winner Cairo Cat. He is standing this year at Airdrie Stud for a fee of $25,000, stands and nurses.
