Ten Broeck Farm’s Chanteline captured Saturday’s $50,000 Richie Scherer Memorial at Fair Grounds Race Course following a pressured trip to give the 5-year-old daughter of Majesticperfection her first stakes win.
Chanteline broke alertly and settled in behind the early leader Our Valor through an opening quarter in 21.87. Our Valor began to tire nearing the top of the stretch, Chanteline went around her fading foe, then held off the late surge of One Last Shot and was kept to task in the lane to win by three-quarters of a length in a final time of 1:03.30 for the 5½-furlong turf trip.
“She broke well today and I just let her be,” said rider Jamie Theriot said. “She got left last time (in a Keeneland allowance) and came running, so today I just let her be and she found a good spot down the backside.”
Chanteline won for the fifth time in 19 career starts and earned $30,070 for the victory to boost her lifetime bankroll to $312,722.
The winner was bred by Airdrie’s Brereton C. Jones, out of Listen to Libby and a half-sister to stakes winner Kell Paso.
