Airdrie-bred juvenile fillies, Sexyama and She’s Divine completed the exacta in today’s opener at Laurel Park – a Maiden Special Weight for two-year-old fillies going 6 furlongs on firm turf. Later on the card, the corresponding race on dirt was won in eyecatching fashion by another Airdrie-bred filly, Bye Bye Bertie, a second-time starter trained by Hamilton Smith for Jerry Romans et al.
Away alertly, Bye Bye Bertie took the lead and skipped along down the backstretch with her ears pricked. Inching clear on the turn under minimal urging, she extended her advantage in the homestretch with her pilot, Victor Carrasco looking around for her opposition. Despite finishing well within herself she ran the final quarter in 24.00 seconds, posting a final time of 1:10 3/5. A daughter of Alternation, Bye Bye Bertie is the first foal out of Dream Of Bertie, a half-sister to three Graded performers out of the Grade 2 winner, De Bertie.
