Top-five First-Crop sire Creative Cause added another impressive maiden special weight winner to his lengthy list of debut winners on Dec. 21 when Oilfield Assay sprinted home a 4 1/4-length winner at Sunland Park.
Creative Cause now has 17 winners and is near $900,000 in progeny earnings, which ranks him in the top 10 in both categories on this year’s Freshman Sire list.
Oilfield Assay looked like a winner throughout Wednesday’s contest. After stalking the pace along the fence on the backstretch and around the turn, he swung around pacesetter Lucas Day at the top of the homestretch, then smartly sprinted clear of a pair of challengers to his outside to win going away under a hand ride (VIDEO).
The winner was bred by Jane Wiggins out of the Undbridled’s Song mare Unbridled Assay. Oilfield Assay’s second dam A. P. Assay won the Grade 2 A Gleam H. and is a half-sister to Came Home, a three-time Grade 1 winner of $1.8 million.
