Significant Form is likely bound for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1) next month at Del Mar following her rousing win in the $200,000 Miss Grillo S. (G3) at Belmont Park on Sunday.
Ridden by Irad Ortiz, Jr. Significant Form broke alertly and took up a good spot on the outside in third moving out of the bend onto the backstretch. From there, Ortiz sat patiently until calling on the gray filly at the top of the lane, when she responded eagerly to go on to a one-length victory in 1:42.29 on the firm turf.
“She broke good and we were really close,” Ortiz said. “We weren’t going too fast. We ran a little slow, so I wanted to just hold my position. I was good where I was. I knew when I’d asked her, she’d be there for me.
“She’s comfortable,” he added. “Going a mile and a sixteenth as a 2-year-old first time out [maiden race on August 27], it’s hard. She has a lot of talent and she did it. Coming back today, I knew she’d be better because she already had [the distance].”
Significant Form finished first in that Saratoga maiden, but was disqualified to seventh by the stewards. She is Creative Cause’s seventh stakes winner this year, which leads all Second-Crop sires.
“In her first start, it was an unfortunate situation where she was disqualified, but we understand the decision and the situation,” trainer Chad Brown said. “She’s trained forwardly in the mornings since that race and today she got a good trip and really showed great ability. This win is really encouraging going forward and heading into the Breeders’ Cup.”
Significant Form, owned by Stephanie Seymour Brant, picked up $120,000 in victory. She was bred in Kentucky by Airdrie owner Brereton C. Jones. Out of Church by the Sea, Significant Form is a half-sister to Grade 3 winner Hay Dakota.
