Creative Cause’s Skyler’s Scramjet turned in an electrifying performance in the $200,000 Tom Fool H. (G3), winning the six furlong affair for older horses by 1 1/2-lengths in his first start in a graded stakes.
Trained by Michelle Nevin for Marcello Micozzi and SJB Stable, Skyler’s Scramjet had won three of his last four starts, all in allowance races, encouraging his trainer to try the Tom Fool.
Jockey Trevor McCarthy let Skyler’s Scramjet sit just behind Green Gratto, who sped through the half-mile in :46.55 seconds. It was at that point that Skyler’s Scramjet exploded to the lead and quickly opened up on the field. Do Share came running late, but was no threat to the winner, who covered the distance in 1:11.38.
“Trevor did a great job,” Nevin said. “Smart move just sitting off that horse [Green Gratto]. He had plenty horse when he asked him in the upper stretch to finish. We’ll see how he comes out of this race and from there decide where we go next. He certainly ran huge today, so that’s encouraging.”
Skyler’s Scramjet, a half-brother to stakes winners Arcadian and Heaven On Hold, has now won five of his 10 starts and earned $292,872. The 4-year-old was bred by Tommy Ligon.
Creative Cause currently ranks second on this year’s Third-Crop Sire list, with the likes of Kentucky Derby (G1) contender My Boy Jack among his leading runners.
