The first 2-year-olds offered at auction by Cairo Prince went through the sales ring Tuesday at the March 13-14 OBS March Sale of 2-year-olds in Training, with a colt by Airdrie stallion bringing $500,000, one of the top 10 lots during the session.
The dark bay colt, consigned by Crupi’s New Castle Farm, agent as hip No. 61, was purchased by Jamie MacCalmont, agent for Jon Kelly. Crupi was the winning buyer at $100,000 when the colt was offered at the 2017 Keeneland September Yearling sale.
“If you watch the (under tack show) video, you’ll see that the guy was standing up on him and he still did [an eighth in] :10 1/5–he wasn’t even going,” Kelly said. “He’s got a good, long stride. He’s got a chance to be a nice horse.”
The Kentucky-bred colt, who had breezed an eighth-mile in a rapid :10 1/5 at last week’s Under Tack Show, is out of the Stephen Got Even mare Summer Shade, who is a half-sister to multiple graded stakes winner Hot Summer as well as graded stakes-placed Stirred Up.
Cairo Prince was one of the hottest first-crop sires at the sales in 2017 as well, with a yearling average of $150,786, more than 15 times his bred-on stud fee. After covering nearly 300 mares combined in his first two years at stud, he is standing at Airdrie this year for $25,000 live foal guarantee.
