The commercial response to Cairo Prince’s progeny is as strong as ever, buoyed by the fact that he has already sired 12 individual winners, including the G3 Iroquois S. winner, Cairo Cat.
On Tuesday, at the reformatted OBS October Yearling Sale, a powerful yearling son of Cairo Prince drew a winning bid of $340,000 from Mark Casse, becoming the highest-priced yearling ever sold at the historic Ocala property. Casse, bidding on behalf of Mr. John C. Oxley, described the colt as “a real handsome colt…sleek” before comparing him to Classic Empire, who, like Cairo Prince is a son of Pioneerof The Nile. Of course, Classic Empire was the Eclipse Champion Juvenile colt of 2016 for these same connections. Casse also noted that Cairo Prince’s early runners “are coming around of late as they are stretching out, which is what we like.”
The gray or roan yearling colt was bred by Martha Jane Mulholland of Mulholland Springs, out of the Concord Point mare, Minutia, who herself is a half-sister to the Stakes winner and Stakes producer, Mykindasaint. He was consigned to the sale by Stuart Morris on behalf of a pinhooking venture.
Following the electric response to his first-crop yearlings, of which a staggering 43 individuals brought six-figure prices, Cairo Prince’s second-crop of yearlings are being similarly well received. To date, 40 individuals have averaged almost $120,000, with over half of those attaining six-figures. And with his progeny making increasingly regular visits to the winners’ circle, this trend can continue.
