Upstart’s stellar 2-year-old sales results continued Monday during the first session of the June 29-30 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Sale of 2-year-olds when hip No. 173 brought a winning bid of $400,000.
The price was the second-highest filly of the session and the second-most paid for any lot by a freshman sire.
From Carry Frommer’s consignment, was purchased by Nick Sallusto & Hanzly Albina, agents. Frommer had purchased the dark bay for $120,000 as a yearling.
The filly had breezed a furlong in a bullet 10 seconds flat at last week’s Under Tack show.
“As soon as I saw her, I fell in love with her,” Frommer said. “I thought she was the epitome of a beautiful filly, elegant, long and scopey and athletic.”
The filly is out of the Pure Prize stakes-winning mare Plum.
With 17 lots sold to date, Upstart’s 2-year-olds are selling for an average that is more than 13 times his advertised stud fee.
