Summer Assault gets first stakes win in Mystic Lake Derby

Summer Assault made a bold move along the rail with a furlong to run en route to the first stakes win for the 3-year-old son of Summer Front in the $100,000 Mystic Lake Derby on July 15 at Canterbury Park.

Coming off a very sharp front-running allowance win at Tampa Bay Downs in late May, Summer Assault laid just off the pace on the inside rail about a length behind Plane Talk, who went the first half-mile in :47.68. When Plane Talk drifted off the rail entering the stretch, Summer Assault made his way through the narrow opening and came home a one-length winner in 1:34.15 for the mile on the firm turf.

Summer Assault races for the group of Kevin Marko, Last Call Racing Partnership, Union Park Thoroughbreds, LLC and Cherrywood Racing Stables II. With his latest win, his record stands at 3-1-1 in six starts.

Summer Assault was bred by Brereton Jones and is out of the Include mare Quality Included.

Summer Front, a stakes winner himself over four consecutive years, is the sire of three stakes winners and five stakes horses in 2020, behind only American Pharoah and Constitution on the Second-Crop sire list.
