Upstart’s Social Chic earns first stakes victory

Social Chic won an early speed duel then pulled clear in the final three furlongs to win the $75,000 Robert Leavitt S. on Friday night at Charles Town Races.

The 3-year-old is the fourth stakes winner and one of six stakes horses for Upstart, who is currently fifth on the Second-Crop Sire list with nearly $2.3 million in progeny earnings.

Social Chic broke very well from the rail but got immediate pressure from Missionsninetynine, who gunned for the lead from post 10. Social Chic held his top spot through a half-mile in :46.08, when Missionsninetynine began to fade. Social Chic was kept to task the rest of the way and won by nearly three lengths in 1:24.61 on a fast main track.

“He came into it really good and when he drew the rail we knew that he had to be on the move early,”  trainer Jeff Runco said. “He’s got plenty of early speed and he got pressed early and then still had plenty left at the end.”

Social Chic, who is owned by Smart Angle LLP, is 5-3-0 in 10 starts and has earned $143,197. He was bred by James Franklin Miller. His third dam Oath won the Grade 1 Spinaway S. and is a sister to 2-year-old champion War Pass.
