Power in Numbers gets up late, takes Tale of the Cat

Marcus Hersh, DRF

Power in Numbers wins the Tale of the Cat at Monmouth Park on Sunday.

Power In Numbers by Girvin, pushed past Arrebato in the final furlong Sunday at Monmouth Park to win a watered-down renewal of the $95,000 Tale of the Cat Stakes.

The Tale of the Cat was carded for turf but rained onto dirt, leaving three main-track-only entrants and Impetud after scratches. Favored at 7-10, Power in Numbers and jockey Samy Camacho made an early bid from the back of the four-horse field, moving from last to take on pacesetting Arrebato past the half-mile pole. Arrebato fought back around the turn and stayed on even terms past the quarter pole, but Power in Numbers took the lead just before the furlong grounds and went on to a 1 1/4-length victory.

It’s Viper, the even-money second choice, finished a distant third, well in front of last-place Impetude.

Power in Numbers was timed in 1:44.28 for 1 1/16 miles on a fast track and paid $3.40. Chad Brown trains Power in Numbers for Klaravich Stables. By Girvin out of Gold Edge, by Eddington, Power in Numbers was bred in Kentucky by Brereton Jones and sold at auction as a yearling for $200,000. He cleared the maiden ranks this past April for a $75,000 claiming tag and came into the Tale of the Cat after a first-level allowance win at Monmouth.
